    Opening New Museum

The New Museum, one of the leading showcases for the art of our time in the US and New York City’s only museum devoted exclusively to contemporary art, will open its new building on the Bowery on Saturday, December 1, 2007. The new New Museum has been relocated from its familiar SoHo locale to a new space, on the edge of the Lower East Side. Coinciding with the institution’s 30th anniversary, the milestone will be celebrated with 30 hours of continuous free admission to the public.

    New Museum by SANAA

Designed by Tokyo-based architects Sejima + Nishizawa / SANAA, it should deliver on its promise to provide Downtown Manhattan with a distinctive new minimalist landmark which appears to be a stack of white cubes on top of each other. And, as Jerry Salz suggests in the New York Magazine, it even could rival other museums for the position on the pedestal as New York’s most talked about gallery as the “MoMA is adrift, the Guggenheim’s leaders continue to make terrible decisions, and the Brooklyn Museum is a giant wasted opportunity. The general feeling is, this is the New Museum’s last best chance to get it right.” Let’s hope so.
