Dresden’s Old Master Galleries in Second Life

The Gemaeldegalerie Alte Meister (Old Masters Picture Gallery) in Dresden, recently opened a 1:1 virtual version of itself in Second Life. All the rooms of the museum have been reconstructed true to scale and all 750 masterpieces in the permanent exhibition are on display, including the museum’s iconic Sistine Madonna (above, second from left). Second Life representatives say it’s the first real-world museum to “clone” itself online, although virtual versions of other collections (most famously “Second Louvre,” which has no official ties to the Paris museum) have popped up before.

One Response to “Dresden’s Old Master Galleries in Second Life”

    1. David Spreekmeester Says:

Interesting to see that a museum of this scale decided to still invest in Second Life, because the enormous Second Life hype that was happening this summer (here in the Netherlands anyway) seems to be over, more or less. Although visitor numbers are still growing steadily, there seems to be a dwindling interest from the commercial marketing area.
Therefore I think it’s nice to see that a promising initiative like this becomes ‘reality’, since there really isn’t a lot of comparable material online in this virtual world. The Second Louvre is a laugh in my humble opinion, it has at least nothing to do with high quality art in the traditional sense. Time to take a peek at the old Dresden masters.
