The Gemaeldegalerie Alte Meister (Old Masters Picture Gallery) in Dresden, recently opened a 1:1 virtual version of itself in Second Life. All the rooms of the museum have been reconstructed true to scale and all 750 masterpieces in the permanent exhibition are on display, including the museum’s iconic Sistine Madonna (above, second from left). Second Life representatives say it’s the first real-world museum to “clone” itself online, although virtual versions of other collections (most famously “Second Louvre,” which has no official ties to the Paris museum) have popped up before.
